Beyerdynamic M 99 Dynamic Microphone for Instumental Recordings & On-Air Broadcasting

The M99 is a large-diaphragm, moving coil dynamic microphone with a hypercardioid pickup pattern.

Similar to the Heil PR 40 in design, size, and application, the M-99 is a high-quality, end-address mic suitable for broadcast voice, instrument, or kick-drum miking.

The moving-coil capsule uses a Neodymium magnet and a low mass Hostaphan (Mylar) diaphragm; Beyerdynamic’s trade name for this architecture is TG-X.

The mic’s frequency response is flat from 100Hz-3000Hz. Above 3k, the mic’s response varies according to the settings of the onboard EQ filter:

• “Linear” — a broad, nearly flat presence peak from 5k-15k, rolling off above 15k
• “Presence Accentuation” — rolls off the LF slightly below 500Hz and more aggressively below 100Hz; creates a presence peak (+5dB @ 4800Hz) and a gentle rolloff above 5k; intended to give a balanced sound for close miking
• “Equalization” — low-mids are scooped (-4dB) from 200-800Hz; the HF is enhanced by a wide presence curve with +6dB peaks at 2k and 6k; intended for kick-drum and “other loud instruments”

The M99 ships with an elastic suspension mount (p/n EA 90) in a foam-lined hardshell plastic suitcase (p/n 2KK 740-833).

The mic has been marketed as both the “M 99” and “M 99 TG;” there is no difference between any two such microphones, apart from the nameplate.
